Getting a line in Firestorm
Gaining three mask symbols in the bonus round
Choosing a Locking symbol for the free spin bonus round
As usual Quickspin has gone for quality over quantity. There’s very little here that’ll shake the slots world, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t a few nice features that add to your time with Firestorm.
The slot has a relatively low number of 25 paylines, across 5 reels.
The symbols on these reels include:
- Standard symbols: Jewels (Symbols of varying worth when lined up along paylines)
- Wild symbols (Substitutes every symbol but Bonus symbol)
- Bonus symbols: Masks (Activate Free Spins when in pairs, but act as Wild symbols if spun alone)
In terms of bonus features, the game is light. The player must spin reels to connect lines of 3 jewel symbols in order to win money, which is based on how valuable the jewel is worth. Wild symbols can be used to substitute these symbols and connect dispersed jewel symbols, decreasing the value of the line, but giving the player at least some payout.
There are also Mask symbols which also act as Wild symbols, but can activate the one bonus mode of the game when in pairs. This bonus mode is a free spin mode. They are available on reels 2,3 and 4.
Firestorm has a few features, both in terms of gameplay and settings, which make it stand out from the crowd. All the features of the game go a long way to making the whole experience much more interesting and user friendly than the slot may have otherwise been.
Free Spins & Locked Symbols Mode
Firestorm features a Free Spin mode that is unlike any we’ve seen. The mode is unlocked by rolling Mask bonus symbols, which change the game substantially.
However, this free spin mode doesn’t just give you a set number of free spins as many others do. Instead once you spin more than one Mask, you are taken to the Locked Symbol screen.
Locked symbols means that certain symbols will be locked in place whenever they’re spun. These symbols will be, the 2 Masks already present (since they’re needed to start the round), any further Masks that appear, any Wild symbols that are spun; finally a random Jewel symbol is selected to also be locked in place.
You will then receive free spins as long as one of these symbols is spun. Once a symbol isn’t spun then the round will end, with any paylines you’ve made totaled up. You will then be given your winnings from this round.
As long as you continue receiving symbols that can be locked in place, you will get one more free subsequent spin. You have a multiplier which will increase, the more Masks that you spin. Any further Masks that are spun, will increase this multiplier and give you one further free spin, that’ll kick in when you don’t spin any symbols, saving you from losing the round immediately.
It’s a round that usually doesn’t last long, since any symbols that appear on the reels will be locked in place blocking other symbols from appearing. Because the reel space will be eventually used, it will make it statistically less likely for you to continue landing on the symbols you need.
In this way, this bonus round is annoying, because with few paylines and limited space for required symbols to land, you are unlikely to make a big win. When you do hit a big win, it can be a thrilling experience, but beyond that, the round may be unsatisfying for those who want bigger wins, more often.
You’d have to be an impatient person to think slots were slow paced. But for those that do think that, Quickspin have added in a speedy feature. Fast Play basically cuts down the time the animations take during play.
If you’re not interested in window dressing and simply want to get straight to the outcome, then fast play is the mode for you. It’s available from the play screen as well, so you don’t even have to waste time going into the menu.
Quickspin usually are very conservative with their graphics expenditure and Firestorm is no different. There’s no 3D models or anything too taxing outside of some very nice looking fire effects, so any strain to your hardware should be kept to a minimum.
As always we play our games on a mid range smartphone (Sony Xperia E1) and a desktop. We experienced no issues across either platform, but be aware some lower tier phones may struggle with the effects on display. But as always, if your phone has a history of not handling modern slots well, then this should be no shocker that this slot may cause some issues.
Firestorm is a Quickspin game and so it shouldn’t be too hard to know what you’re getting. They’re making the same slots they always do. It’s a well made slot with no glitches or issues in terms of play.
One criticism which can be levied against Quickspin is that they consistently fail to add much innovation to their games. Everything is well made but it would be nice to see more braver additions to their slots.
This time around though, Quickspin have added in some features which definitely give us something we haven’t seen before. The Locking symbols free spin mode is certainly interesting. Although only a small tweak to the regular formula, we thoroughly enjoyed it this time and hope to see more of this in the future.
Plus Fast play is a great feature that more slots should have. It’s nice to see that with all the effort Quickspin has put into the aesthetics of Firestorm, they’re happy to let you speed through it, for the player’s own enjoyment.
Overall, we’d recommend Firestorm. Its lessened paylines are an issue and payouts are rarer, but when they happen, they happen in full force. An interesting twist on their bonus rounds and a great art style, make Firestorm one of our surprise favorites from this year. Hopefully, it can be the same for you.Back to Top
