Here’s a game by the folks across the pond – Gunsmoke. This new mobile slot aptly sums up American cowboy culture as we know it – gun-toting bandits, mustached sheriffs and epic shootouts. The game is set in a Wild West saloon and packed with typical Western characters – Pestus the outlaw, the Sheriff and Kitty the lady. Know those “Wanted” posters that guarantee a cash prize if you hunt down a baddie? In this game, it’ll reward you cash multipliers if you nail down a Wild symbol! If you’re a fan of the Wild West, you won’t want to miss out on Gunsmoke.

Gunsmoke has 40 paylines, all of which are automatically activated during every spin in the game. You can adjust your wager sizes using the settings dashboard below the reels. The game starts at 40p per spin and goes all the way up to £160. The wide range of bets accepted will quench the appetites of both low and high-rollers. Its 4×5 reels are stocked with Wild West-themed symbols such as a gun holster, a Sheriff’s badge and playing cards.
A word of advice though: you must be extra careful with your budget. Gunsmoke is a relatively low variance game. What this means is that you’ll get lots of small wins that aren’t massively impressive. The largest win is decent (750 coins), but only occur if you score five symbols in a row (often unlikely). Meanwhile, the regular wins are a mediocre 15x to 20x of your bet value.
There are “Wanted” posters on the top of each reel that displays multipliers (2x, 3x, 4x or 5x). Whenever a Wild symbol lands on reel three, one of the “Wanted” posters light up and the multiplier value is applied to all wins on the board.
There bonuses in Gunsmoke come in the shape of a shootout or Free Spins. These bonus games are triggered by three or more Scatter symbols. Either one of these two bonus games will be presented to you when you score three Scatter symbols. I’d say that the chances of either game appearing is roughly 50-50.
Gunsmoke is not one of those wimpy games that give you two measly free spins and call it a day. In Gunsmoke, you’ll enjoy 8, 12 or even 16 free games, depending on the number of scatters that triggered the bonus. Each free game comes with extra multipliers too. The “Wanted” posters at the top of the reels offer doubled multipliers during the free games and these multipliers can go up to 10x. Similar to the base game, the multiplier is awarded whenever a Wild lands on Reel 3.
During the Shootout Bonus, 12 playing cards will be displayed on the screen, face down. Your task is to select matching cards; you’ll have three to five turns to do so. If you successfully match the cards, you’ll get extra free spins added to your total. It’s quite a pointless, profitless bonus game really. I’d rather play the Free Spins rounds any day of the year.
There are three types of characters in every Western movie – bandits, law-keepers and a pretty damsel. In the Gunsmoke slot game, these guys are named Pestus, Marshall and Kitty. I did not make these names up! Apparently, these three guys are characters from an actual TV show titled Gunsmoke, which ran from 1955 to 1975.
The background shows TV stills from that show. And that is why the game looks like something that was created in the 70s! Of course, you could look at this two ways: either it’s a brilliant homage to the classic Western movie, or that it’s a shabbily-drawn slot.
Gunsmoke is created by a Chicago-based company called 2×2 Gaming. We may never have heard of their games until today. In a clever move to reach a greater audience, 2×2 Gaming partnered up with Microgaming, one of the world’s largest slot makers. Thanks to this partnership, online casino players from across the globe will be able to play Gunsmoke on Microgaming’s Quickfire platform.
Sadly, the game isn’t as action-packed as a proper cowboy movie. There aren’t any three-minute shootout bonuses or four-figure rewards. The only thing worth playing for are the free spins and the occasional Wild Wanted multiplier. I’ve racked my brains to think if any other slot developer had produced a cowboy slot more worthy of your time but have come up blank. It’s one of the few genres of slot games that hasn’t been done enough!
