Johnny the Octopus is a 5 reel, 25 payline slot, with a very interesting twist! The slot is 3D, meaning instead of the usual reels, your symbols fill out the ‘floor’ of the game and, instead of spinning, swim off and then reappear. It also means that the icons can spin, dance and more – it’s very visually striking and innovative.
The paylines in Johnny the Octopus are adjustable, which is great and means its a slot for all kinds of players. The maximum bet is £25, with £1 on every payline, and the minimum bet is 10p (playing just one line).
There’s also an autoplay function to the game, which means you can sit back and watch as the game plays on your behalf. SoftSwiss have given this a clever design with a lever, which offers auto-spins in multiples of 5, up to 100. Alternatively, you can autospin ‘to infinity’, which means it will continue spinning until you tell it to stop or, alas, you run out of money. We like the unique autospins feature, although we wish we could set a limit on when it would stop as this makes it easier to manage your money.
The game, as you’ve probably guessed, is a ocean theme, with various sea-creatures accompanying your game. However, a little bizarrely, none of the symbols feature the eponymous octopus of the slot! Instead, big wins come from lining up five of the same icons, especially the dolphin and the turtle.
As Johnny seems too busy to play, we think its only right we give these two bigger icons a firstname too, so meet Danny the Dolphin and Tony the Turtle (I’m digressing I know). Tony offers an impressive 400x mutlipler when you’ve collected five of him, although it’s Danny who rewards you with the biggest win. Five dolphins will see you granted a 1000x win!
The main features in Johnny the Octopus are the multiplier wilds, the scatter icons and the free spins. Perhaps the least impressive of these are the scatter icons, which are represented by the oyster. The scatter icons offer rewards in multiples of 7. So three scatter icons grants you a pretty unimpressive 7x prize, four scatters gives you 77x, and five scatters rewards players with 777x. These icons, of course, can appear anywhere on the board and don’t have to align to a specific payline.
Moving on, the wilds in Johnny the Octopus are respresented with a very smiley puffer fish. We think we know why he’s so happy, as he’s the icon offering the most impressive prize of the whole game. First off, the wilds will substitute any other icon in the game to make up a winning payline, however, it’s when you line up these wilds that things get interesting. Five puffer fishes in a row hands out a very respectable 8888x!
In our eyes no slot is complete without offering some free spins. Luckily Johnny the Octopus is giving away 10 free spins – although they’re seemingly hard to come by. To access the free spins, you need to collect 2 of the treasure chest symbols, however these must fall on reels 1 and 5. Although, there is an upside. Once you access these free spins, reels 1 and 5 are made up of entirely wild symbols – meaning there’s so many chances of finding a winning payline.
The performance of this slot is outstanding. For a slot that’s offering incredibly innovative graphics, the game is still quick to load on all devices. Plus, it looks stunning too! The 3D icons are colourful and fun, and the backdrop is well illustrated without being distracting. The soundtrack offers a more upbeat ocean sound than other seascape slots out there, and the bubble noises are fun – if only for five minutes before you hit mute!
The 3D design is great as it lets the icons move and dance, plus we really like what it means for big-win celebrations. Instead of the usual cascading shower of gold coins, they’re fired at you out of the pirate ship. As they come flying towards the screen don’t be fooled into ducking, instead notice how the winning symbols are also engraved into the sand – a nice touch!
SoftSwiss aren’t a software designer we’ve heard a lot about, but we have to say we’re impressed. The company, as you can guess, is based in Switzerland, and have been operating since 2008. Aswell as creating their own slots, they also manage casinos, meaning Johnny the Octopus is unique to their sites.
However, as much as we like the feeling of exclusivity, we wish we could see the game at more of our favorite casinos. SoftSwiss generally deal with Bitcoin casinos, although we’d love to see them go more mainstream. From playing Johnny the Octopus we can see they’ve got the ambition and skill to battle it out with the likes of NetEnt and NextGen, so hopefully we’ll be seeing more of their games soon!
So, apart from questioning where the hell is Johnny, what else did this slot leave us thinking about? We love the design and the graphics and we think the move to 3D is probably the future of slots.
We also love that it’s easy to use on all devices.
That being said, it’s a slot for patient players. Whilst it throws out small wins regularly, finding a big win or a bonus feature can take awhile. But, it offers a decent RTP, so why not dive in?
