As the saying goes, good things come in pairs. Microgaming is out to prove this proverb with its latest slot titled Lucky Twins. At first glance, the slot looks like another unimaginative take on the oriental theme. There were the usual suspects – stacks of gold coins, lucky Chinese cat and lots of red-coloured decoration. I’d usualy give this game a pass. However, the promotional tagline caught my eye. “Twins, wins and spins; twice the celebration!” Could there really be twice the number of wins? It’s time to find out.

Lucky Twins has a standard slot setup. There are 5 reels, 3 rows and 9 paylines. The number of paylines are fixed, which means that you must play with nine paylines in every round. Your level of risk then depends on how much money you place at stake during each round. The game accepts wagers from 10p to £10 per spin. Lots of room for conservative playing as well as adventure. The reels are loaded with symbols that symbolize good luck and prosperity in Chinese culture. There are nuggets of gold, the lucky Meneki Neko cat and auspicious firecrackers; alongside the low-value alphabets. When these symbols line up on paylines, you’ll rack up cash wins in your casino account. Unlocked wins are highlighted in different colours to help you keep track of progress. Regular wins in this game are usually about 5 to 10 times your wager. I’d reckon that this a medium-variance slot. There aren’t too many wins – in fact, there are some periods with no wins at all. However, when the wins do occur, they are usually enough to keep you going for a few spins longer. There is a promising jackpot too – 25,000 coins for the luckiest player! Back to Top.
The feature that takes centre stage in the game are the Lucky Twins themselves. This symbol is the typical wild symbol that substitutes other symbols and completes winning paylines. I like how often the Wild symbol appears in this game. These Lucky Twins can appear anywhere on the screen. The gaming engine is even configured to allow five of them to appear in a single spin! There is also a scatter symbol that gives out free spins. You may get up to 10 free spins at a time. Random cash multipliers are tacked onto these free spins, a cherry on top of an already yummy cake. Sadly, these free spins are hard to come by. I played more than 30 spins before I triggered any free spins. Back to Top.
Excuse my honesty here. The artwork in Lucky Twins is not very tasteful. The Lucky Twins symbol remind me of dolls in horror movies; the gold coins look more tacky than opulent. The Asian percussion and string music playing in the background also got on my nerves after five seconds. Besides these aesthetic flaws lies a well-built game. Lucky Twins is part of the Quickfire portfolio, which is known for their multi-platform compatibility. In other words, you can play Lucky Twins on your mobile phone, tablet or laptop; clunky old devices or news ones alike. Back to Top.
There are fans online who’ve lamented about the lack of originality. In the past two years alone, Microgaming has released multiple iterations of the Oriental theme. We’ve played Lucky Zodiac, Lucky Koi, Lucky Firecracker and Gung Pow. No matter how Microgaming mixes up their pieces, players are not getting the refreshing game that we’re after. It is a pity that Microgaming often sacrifices quality for quantity. On the other side of the coin, players these days do have extremely short attention spans. “New” games are the easiest way to our hearts (and wallets). Back to Top.
This is shoddy work, Microgaming. The game is neither entertaining nor profitable. You’ll most likely walk away no richer than you started. There are no bonus games or innovative slot features. This game seems like a trap that casinos lay out. The “new game” sign lures players to drop a few pounds each, only to discover how uninspiring the game is.
