Review: Peek-a-Boo Slot by Microgaming

Peek-a-Boo Feature ImageIt’s October! Are you ready for Halloween? The casinos are gearing up for the 31st of October with pumpkin-themed slots and seasonal  promotions; Microgaming has jumped onto the bandwagon as well. Their latest slot is adorably named Peek-A-Boo. There are friendly ghosts that resemble Casper, a kid named Buster and lots of candy too!  Best of all, there is a brilliant Free Spins Mode that is bound to add some dollars to your wallet. Consider this the adult’s version of Trick-or-Treat.

Peek-A-Boo consists of 5 reels and 4 rows; 40 paylines in total. Before you play, you can choose the value of the coin that you’ll bet with on every line. This starts as low as 1p per payline, or 40p per spin. Of course, 40p should sit comfortably within most players’ budgets. However, I must compare it to cheaper penny-games. If you start of with £5 and meagre luck, you’ll play through your money in a quick 13 spins!

Peek-a-Boo Gameplay

Here are two things you need to know about the game: the high-value symbols are the ghosts. Meanwhile the candy, chocolate coins and gummy bears are slightly less profitable and only award you small wins. With these small wins, you’ll usually only break even instead of walking away with a profit.

In the base game, there’s a little kid in reel 3 that zaps ghosts for cash prizes. Each ghost that he zaps will be collected in the Ghost Meter {on the far right hand side of the screen). Once the Ghost Meter fills up to 10, Free Spins come out to play! You’ll be awarded with 10 free spins to play with, which is configured to your last bet level.

The action kicks into high-gear during Free Spins mode. During this time, three things happen. Firstly, you’ll enjoy 1024 ways to win! This is a huge boost from the regular 40 paylines in the base game. As a result, winnings start piling up one after another and celebratory messages dance across the screen.

Peek-a-Boo Stacked Wild

Wild Symbols become Super Stacked Wild Symbols, and appear in huge clusters on row 4 and 5. Have you ever seen the entire reel light up with Wild Symbols? I can tell you from personal experience that it is a huge thrill. Hundreds of paylines are completed and your bank balance just shoots through the roof!

Peek-a-Boo Spooky Reels

Spooky Reels are activated. When players score a win with 3 or 4 symbols, the remaining reels will respin immediately at no extra cost. The reels light up with electricity and add extra winning paylines to your spin result.

As you can tell from its name, Peek-A-Boo is a joy to play. It’s one of those Halloween offerings that are made to entertain, rather than frighten. The ghosts bear prizes, instead of nightmares. The colour scheme is cheery, instead of the usual bloody and gory Halloween fare. This light mood is a definite uplifter for any cold autumn night.

Another feature worth pointing out is the autoplay option. This setting allows you to play hands-free, while eating lunch for example. There are also lots of options to customize, such as the auto-spin feature stopping after a certain number of spins or wins.

Unique Features?

Competition is stiff during Halloween, as all slot designers battle it out to create the next attention-grabbing slot. Witches, pumpkins, candy, skeletons, spiders… you name it, I’ve seen it. A few slots stand out from the crowd though. Last October, we enjoyed the unique Creepy Cash by Pocket Fruity.

This game feature a 9×9 grid and match-three game mechanics, and was nothing like a regular slot. Peek-A-Boo is a bit simpler, but no less entertaining. The features are relatively traditional, but the game moves at such a quick pace and you’ll never grow bored.

Droid Slots' Stamp of ApprovalTwo thumbs up to Microgaming, yet again! Peek-A-Boo is the kind of slot that is guaranteed to put a smile in your face and treats in your wallet. I had fun zapping ghosts and chomping up candy; most of all, I enjoyed playing with free spins and money-making features.

I’d strongly recommend that everyone checks out this game before the end of the month. After all, this theme will go stale come 1st November.
