Blackjack vs Poker Players — Top 10 Stereotypes

Bender Poker MemeTwo of the most popular table games alongside roulette, Poker and Blackjack certainly have their fair share of player stereotypes. Despite being different kinds of card games with different rules and ways to bet, there’s a couple of crossovers from both games — they use the same cards, the same chips, and even have the same players.

It doesn’t matter if Blackjack is in favour of the house or that Poker is more sportsman-like, you’re guaranteed to find some of the same kinds of people sitting around the table. So don’t bother going from Texas Hold ‘Em to Blackjack if you  want to avoid them.

But how accurate are these stereotypes? Well, believe or not, there are degrees of accuracy between the two games (depending who you ask). We will judge the accuracy of these stereotypes based on both games on a scale of very accurate to not accurate. This is what we have observed and if you don’t agree… Well, good for you. This is just what we think. Opinions and whatnot.

1) The Drunk

Drunk Poker PlayerThis one is pretty self-explanatory. Usually taking the form of that guy on a stag night or just a Friday-night booze up, they sit at the table, laugh for no reason and tell you that they love you. They’re not actually all that interested in the game they’re playing and often fall asleep at your elbow.

Sometimes they slop beer on the baize or your sleeve. Because their sense of judgement is impaired, they tend to take higher-risk bets than normal and either cry or throw a tantrum when they lose. If they don’t then and there, they certainly will regret it in the morning!

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Very accurate
  • Blackjack — Accurate

2) The Conservative

Stingy Guy You know this one too. This is the guy who always plays it safe. He puts down the smallest bets possible and raises an eyebrow every time you go all in. His chips always seem plentiful because he doesn’t bet more than £10 at a time.

And yet, sometimes, this strategy works — and incredibly well! Showing restraint can prove profitable as you lose less and gain more. You may not gain a lot in one go but a great deal of patience and discipline can go a long way.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Accurate
  • Blackjack — Very accurate

3) The Risk-Taker

Risk Taker MemePerhaps the complete opposite of the Conservative, the Risk-Taker is the player that literally jumps up from his seat with a grin and proclaims: “ALL IN!!” as he slides all his available chips across the table. This may be met with some well-deserved sighs of exasperation from players when he loses.

We can’t help but admire his guts, though, and he’s so jovial that everyone loves him even when he loses. For him, it’s all about playing and never about winning. He may be reckless but nobody really cares. Not even him.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Not so accurate
  • Blackjack — Accurate

4) The “I Have No Idea What I’m Doing” Guy

Dog Playing PokerWe’ve all been this person at one point. Whether in a friendly game with friends or experiencing the real thing, sometimes the only way to learn how to play is to plunge head-first into the deep end. And sometimes that can have disastrous results as well as frustration on the part of other players.

The “I Have No Idea What I’m Doing Guy” often appears bamboozled by the rules of Poker or awfully stumped at the betting rules of Blackjack. They often say “Go Fish!” when the dealer asks if they’re hitting or folding. These are the people with very little experience in the game they’re playing and who feel incredibly out of their depth. Often young and often goes away crying.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Very accurate
  • Blackjack — Somewhat accurate

5) The Loud Mouth

Loud MouthThis is another one that’s pretty self-explanatory. There is always one person at every table of Blackjack who talks to you like you’re at opposite ends of a football pitch. You may walk away from the game with an extra £50 but also with a deaf ear.

The Loud Mouth loves to show how much he loves gambling and discussing his strategies non-stop even if they don’t work. They’ll be sure to annoy you more than anyone else in the game and their never-ending chatter serves as a distraction to put you off. Ignoring them doesn’t always work. The best thing to do is make sure they’re not next to you. Or wear headphones. That might work.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Not accurate
  • Blackjack — Very accurate

6) The Angry Fish

Angry Poker PlayerThis player always sits in sullen silence when the cards are being dealt but when they lose, they pipe up. And often in an explosive manner. Bad at playing, the Angry Fish often blames the casino for their losses, claiming the game is rigged and threatens the dealer.

Poker chips fly everywhere and cards get bent out of shape. Sometimes the table is flipped on its side. Even when the Angry Fish wins, he looks annoyed about it. He is that much of a sore loser. There’s no pleasing him. And there’s almost no escape from him. Wherever you go, he’ll be there. Best to just humour him.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Very accurate
  • Blackjack — Very accurate

7) The Passive Player

Doormat LegsThese players are the players who let someone tell them how to play and blindly accept their fate when they lose up to a £1,000. They are almost literally doormats. They have no strategy of their own and copy other players’s moves to the point where it’s as though they’ve lost all their free will.

Gambling-wise, they have no individuality and get hopelessly flustered when asked to fold. Unlike previous players on this list, this player often goes unnoticed and people often perceive an empty space where they are sitting.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Very accurate
  • Blackjack — Accurate

8) The One Who Wears Sunglasses

Sunglasses Poker PlayerThe trouble is, a lot of people find it very difficult to lie. In Poker, it’s essential to have what is known as a “poker face” so that the other players cannot tell if you’re bluffing. It’s something you have to practice in order to get right and often people find it hard to get right.

So they resort to the next best thing — wear sunglasses. That way, no one can see your eyes. It’s a fairly simple solution to a timeless problem, however it makes you stick out like a sore thumb. And there’s always at least one person who does it, even though they forget wearing sunglasses indoors makes them look rather silly.

You look at them and wonder: “How on earth can they see their cards?” Here’s the secret — they can’t. They just make it up as they go along.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Very accurate
  • Blackjack — Somewhat accurate

9) The  New Guy

New Guy BadgeVery similar to the “I Have No Idea What I’m Doing” Guy, the New Guy is the fresh-faced, plucky player who has spent the past five hours on YouTube learning how to play poker. They think they know the rules when, in reality, they don’t.

They soon have that rude awakening when what they thought was a good move goes south and end up losing quite a bit of money. We were all new players once, though, so it’s easy to sympathise and once we return to the poker table, we’re always a little wiser. But it’s best to play with your friends before gambling with real money.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Somewhat accurate
  • Blackjack — Accurate

10) The Closed Book

Poker Face GriffinThese players are a cross between the conservative players and the ones who wear sunglasses. They are impossible to read with the perfect poker face… and it isn’t necessarily a blank expression! They can look vaguely amused or quietly enraged.

Either way it does not reflect their true feelings and their true feelings are impossible to guess. They are a master of deception and because of this they often hoodwink the other players (and quite often win). You stare at them and try to guess what’s going on in their heads but for all you know they could be thinking about their cat. Their faces may as well be blank.

Accuracy:

  • Poker — Very accurate
  • Blackjack — Accurate

Victoria's Mobile Casino Blog Project

When Victoria started writing for Droid Slots, she had never played on a mobile slot in her life. Although it’s hard to believe given her current level of expertise, it’s been a steep learning curve for her, and the last few months have seen her wading through a whole new word of games and casinos. We hate to miss a great opportunity, as so had Victoria write about her experiences in her very own blogging section of the site. Our hope is that other players who are finding their feet can use Victoria’s discoveries as a guide to their own play. As the way she engages with casinos gets more sophisticated, so do her explanations of how to deal with the new experiences. If you’re a new player just starting out, or ever a seasoned player looking for a good read, Victoria’s blog project section is a  great place to look.
