The Brexit debate has been raging on for months now and is about to come to a head this Thursday, but surprisingly the debate has made its way to the bookmakers in a big way. The outcome of England leaving the EU has become “the biggest non-sporting event the bookmaking industry has seen” according to Matthew Shaddick, Head of Political Betting at Ladbrokes.
He seems like the man to who would know, but the numbers match that statement, with Ladbrokes predicting that the referendum will have around £100 Million wagered on it by the end of Thursday.
The Big Brexit Bet
Brexit has had a surprisingly inspired time at the betting shops. Even equally large scale votes such as last year’s general election and the Scottish independence referendum have been beaten by the Euro referendum multiple times over. The general election garnered around £25 Million in total bets wagered, only a quarter of the predicted Brexit bets.
Despite the polls leaning towards leave result, the data from the bookies shows otherwise, with 75.3% of the cash wagered in favour of a remain outcome, according to a William Hill report. If you’re interested in getting involved before the big result, the current remain odds that Ladbrokes are hosting stand at 2/7, with the leave odds ranging from 5/2 to 3/1.
