What does gamification mean?
Gamification is becoming a bit of a buzz-word. It’s increasingly being used as a tool in business, education, social media, and what we’re focussing on, mobile casinos. But what does gamification mean? Simply put, gamification is the process of taking elements of game playing (such as role-playing, leader boards and levels) and incorporating these elements into areas of life which are not primarily game-related.
Gambling and games
As you will have noticed, the concept of game has never been very far away from the concept of gambling; both tend to involve a combination of chance and skill. In fact, gambling is sometimes referred to as gaming. However, the most important difference between gambling and traditional games, such as snakes and ladders, is money. You didn’t play snakes and ladders as a child for the money, or at least most of us didn’t. You played it because it was fun.
Casinos hope that when you put gambling and games together – or gamify – you will get a more enjoyable gambling experience. When you visit online casinos that use lots of gamification, you may find the gambling experience to be more stimulating and motivating than if you play at one that doesn’t use many gamification techniques. The enjoyable experience of gamified casinos may encourage you to return, regularly, to gamified casinos over non-gamified ones, which leads us to one of the main reasons why online casinos use gamification: the development of loyal customers.

Check out the article topics that we'll cover in this guide!
1. Unlockable Content
Unlockable content is content which a player can access once they have passed a certain stage in a game or level in a casino, or gathered a certain number of points.
Instead of simply playing against a computer, in tournaments, players get to compete with their fellow gamblers.
Narratives are the story-line that you follow as you play a game. Features of narratives include plot, characters, themes and music.
A casino's community is their customers, and there are various ways in which casinos try to make gambling at their casino more sociable. For instance, they might allow players to create user profiles, or allow them to talk to each other on forums.
5. Virtual Currency
A virtual currency is a currency created by a casino that can be exchanged for other items of value at that casino, such as high street shopping vouchers, or to unlock new games. (This is not to be confused with virtual currencies like Bitcoin)
6. Levelling Up
Levelling-up refers to the process by which a player moves up a level within a game, or within a casino as a whole.
With regards to levelling-up within a game, an example of this is Level Up Video Poker. You will have noticed that card games, such as Poker, are already very game like, and we might say that these games are inherently gamified. However, gamification is not an all-or-nothing concept and card games can be further gamified using levelling-up.
Levelling up can also happen outwith particular games, applying to the casino as a whole. In the Casumo Adventure at Casumo , you can level-up through playing games and gaining points. When you level-up you will be able to access new content and new games, which is why Unlockable Content is closely related to levelling up.
7. Gamification in Practice at Casumo
