Here comes a new slot that invites you to “play like a rebel”. This game is based on the legendary Aemrican actor, James Dean, who became a cultural icon after the release of his 1955 film, Rebel Without a Cause. Having never watched the movie myself, I wasn’t the least bit interested. The game would have to have really exciting features to excite anyone born after the 1980s. Are there any features that inspire rebelliousness? Are there thrilling ways to gamble? Read on to find out.

James Dean has five reels and 25 paylines. It’s a really standard game – match symbols on a payline to win a payout. There are 10 paying symbols in total and the chances of scoring winning paylines are fairly average. The high value symbols are his car or bike, both awards up to 5000x your wager. The alphabet symbols are less inspiring, with average wins of about 5 to 15x. The marketing leaflet prints a RTP of 95%. In other words, for every £10 that you play, you’ll win an average of £9.50.
Each payline costs 1p to £2. Since the number of paylines you can play with are fixed, each spin would then cost between 25p and £50. This fits a large range of budgets. I wouldn’t recommend betting more than £1 per spin though, since the game does not pay out very well.

First of all, there are free spins to be won. If three or more Scatter symbols appear (in any position on the reels), you’ll score the Free Spins Bonus. During the free spins, all wins are doubled. Free Spins can be retriggered; if you’re lucky enough for this to happen, the game will reward you by multiplying all wins by 3x.
The possibility of retriggering free spins are boundless, and the game can multiply all wins up to 5 times! Watch out for the movie clapper board symbol too – this one grants up to three Legend Spins every time it appears on reel 3. The Legend Spins play out after the free spins are over, with a 5x multiplier tacked on top of every win.
There are also a plethora of Wild bonuses. The Green Dean (a portrait of James Dean against a green cityscape background) makes an entire reel go wild. This Green Dean feature is similar to Microgaming’s Expanding Wild feature. The Blue Dean (another sweaty portrait against blue neon lights) substitutes all symbols to complete winning paylines. A maximum of four Blue Deans can contribute to a given payline.
Finally, if the Gold Dean appears on reel three, it’ll trigger a “pick me” bonus game. Three James Dean symbols will appear; click one of them to reveal a random multiplier value. However, these multipliers are nothing to shout about. The highest value is a mere 5x.
This James Dean slot meets the minimum required standards for any slot today. Slick animation, handsome pictures, bearable background music and the like. The game is available on both desktop and mobile. I’ve tried it on both platforms and have found that it performs well on either.
On top of the basics, it even has enough features to make it interesting. Personally, I really enjoyed the touch of the “gamble feature” in this game. After all, the slot is produced by NextGen Gaming, which is a reputable slot developer in the market today.
Branded games are a slot developer’s secret weapon. Each brand appeals to a dedicated group of fans, whose hearts flutter at the sight of their favourite pop-culture icon immortalized in slot format. From my insider intel, I learn that these games generate huge demand within these small and targeted markets.
NextGen Gaming taps the celebrity/famous people space yet again. Late last year, Next Gen released “An Evening with Holly Madison”, which features the American model and showgirl. James Dean is a fitting follow-up to their line of branded slot games.
The game would really only appeal to James Dean’s fans. I did not fancy having so many pictures of his face plastered across my mobile screen. The features are standard fare and the game is not particularly profitable. I guess the ladies could visit the game for some eye candy, but don’t stay too long. There are plenty of other fun slots in the market today.
