The Flame online slot is almost too cool for school, with neon symbols and lights and an electrifying blue flame at the foot of the reels. The flames change colour, burning hotter and brighter as you strike a winning payline or hit on one of the game’s bonus features. The contrasting blue metal backdrop makes the bright and colourful graphics stand out even more.
Although NextGen Gaming is a relatively small developer, its online slots are of a high standard, and Flame is no exception. The game’s graphics are well polished, with impressive computer-generated fire and blazing flames. The spinning reels are silky smooth and winning paylines dazzle with eye-popping animation. There's an ambient soundtrack to accompany the neon wilderness of the game, and it'll jump to life when you hit on a win or launch one of the bonus rounds.
Symbols and Features
The Flame slot features three tiers of regular symbols. The top tier is metallic animal heads – a lion, wolf and eagle. The next level has four elemental symbols – fire, lightning, water and a leaf. Lastly, there are the shapes of a deck of cards – hearts, diamonds, clubs and spades.
NextGen Gaming brings a wealth of bonus games and features to this slot, with the circular bonus symbol or the bonus wild icon featuring a fiery pink-haired woman available during the Firestorm mini-feature. Hitting on three of these icons will whisk you off in a fiery inferno to the free games round, where you'll have 15 free spins.
The great thing about the free spins is there are so many mini-features up for grabs – it's as if NextGen is trying to help you win. Although the game has a medium to high variance, the RTP for the bonus round is slightly higher than the normal game for this reason.
Flame has seven mini-features to aim for, each one with a suitably fiery name. These bonus features are triggered at random, and offer different benefits depending on which one you're lucky enough to strike.
Let's take the Cross Flame mini-feature first, which can appear at the end of any spin. When it does, the current game will pay left to right beginning with the leftmost reel, and right to left beginning with the rightmost reel on all paylines.
The Flare Up bonus feature will occur only on any winning reel spin. If it does appear after a winning payline, it'll multiply all wins for the current game by a random multiplier, which could be two, three, five, seven or 10. The wins will be paid once only after the multiplier has been revealed.
Just like Cross Flame, the Fire Whirl bonus feature can be triggered randomly on any spin, whether it wins or loses. A flame appears across the reels, and it'll randomly cover one, several, or all reels. If any lion, wolf or eagle symbols are consumed by the flames, you'll be awarded a bonus prize, which is a random multiplier of the total bet, ranging from one-times up to 20-times.
Moving on to the Live Embers mini-feature, this can go live on any spin, and can turn all of the heart, diamond, club and spade symbols on reels two, three, and four into wilds. While all reels can be involved, sometimes Live Embers will affect only one or two of the three special reels. Wins are paid once all the symbols have been transformed if a winning payline is then formed.
With the Spontaneous Combustion bonus, all of the elemental symbols – fire, lightning, water and leaf – will be transformed into the same animal symbol. If any winning paylines are formed from the transformed icons, players will then be paid their prize.
The Wild Inferno bonus is a bit trickier to come by, as it'll trigger only on a spin where a wild symbol appears on any reel. If you hit a winning payline, it'll be paid as well as another re-spin being rewarded for each wild symbol on display. Even better, if wilds appear during the re-spins, you'll receive even more re-spins. Not only that, but all the wild symbols will remain wild for the duration of the Wild Inferno.
Finally, we come to Firestorm. Rather than happen at the end of the spin, firestorm is conjured at the start of one. Just like the DC Comics character with the same name, its power is combination. Firestorm will combine all wild and bonus symbols on reels two, three and four for that spin. These combined symbols substitute for any other icon.
With flashy animation, red-hot graphics and an absorbing soundtrack, Flame is a fun slot. The mini-features bring a lot of variety to the gameplay, but with a medium to high variance, it may burn up your slot money.
