Nowadays, slots developers steer further and further away from the traditional slot formula. They are ditching the three-reel, cherries and 7s symbols for more unique combinations, in a bid to capture the players’ attention. Rocket Returns then, is perhaps one of the most innovative games out there at the moment and we have to say, it's very clever indeed. You’ll immediately notice the hexagonal-shapes, which aren’t even lined up in a standard reel arrangement! You’ll have to match four or more symbols on adjacent hexagons to win. If these reels haven’t piqued your attention yet, you must learn about their Dynamite Wilds and Firecracker Bonuses.

In Rocket Returns, each hexagon acts as one traditional reel; there are nine hexagonal-reels stacked in a diamond-shaped configuration. The reels feature a selection of different coloured bar symbols and 7s. It’s quite poetic to see such classic symbols used in the most modern reels you’d have ever seen. You’ll have to match four or more symbols on adjacent reels to win. In other words, the matching symbols must be in neighbouring hexagons and the edges must touch each other. If you do your math and geometry, that’s 228 ways to win.
According to the paytable, you can win up to 1,268 times your stake. Even if you bet a mere 20p per round, that’s a nice £250 cash win in a single spin!
Each spin costs between 15p and £150. I’d place this as a medium to high variance slot. I must admit, there are long streaks with no wins at all, followed by long streaks of consecutive wins. You should always keep an eye of your bank balance and leave when you start losing more than you win.

The red-coloured stick of dynamite is the game’s Wild symbol. The dynamite only appears on the shape number 5, which is the one right in the middle. This Wild symbol substitutes for every other symbol except the bonus. Whenever the wild symbol forms part of a winning combination, the payout will be multiplied between 1x and 3x!
The other symbol you’d recognize easily is the red and white striped firecracker. This is the bonus symbol. The bonus symbol can appear on reels 1, 5 and 9 (these are the top-most, center and bottom-most shapes on the screen). If three of these bonus symbols appear at the same time, you’ll get five free games! The Wild Multiplier feature makes an appearance during these free games rounds and all wins are multiplied by 1, 2, 3 or 5 times.
Additional free games can also be awarded during the free games bonus feature. One bonus symbol during a free spin gives you one more free spin; two bonuses correspond to two extra free spins and three bonuses for five more. However, don’t count too much on this. I could barely trigger the basic deal of five free games, let alone these additional rounds.

Aesthetically, Rocket Returns looks nothing like a slot. In fact, the rainbow-coloured symbols and beeps for music are reminiscent of an 80s arcade game. I love how every win is celebrated with fireworks and more beeps! (If you peer a little closer at your bank balance at the bottom of the screen, you’ll realize that even “fake” wins are celebrated. Fake in that you actually won less than you spent per spin.) My final point in this section is how amazingly well the game performs on mobiles. The nine hexagons fill up your mobile screen beautifully and creates quite an immersive experience.
Rocket Returns is invented by this gaming company called Scientific Games. This company has been around for more than 30 years – it created the world’s first secure lottery way back in 1974! It's sister company, Bally Technology gave the world, Astro Battle, the arcade game where you move the joystick and shoot incoming battle ships with laser cannons! So with a lot of history to live up to and a cutting-edge namesake, we're pleased to report that Scientific Games have lived up to expectations and brought us this little gem today. Indeed, they’ve invented and reinvented games for many years.
Rocket Returns and its odd-shaped reels is a nice twist on the regular slot game. Sadly, the math algorithm behind the hex engine leaves much to be desired. The wins are too small and far between. Five free spins are far too little too, especially if you consider the fact that most slots nowadays offer up to 30 free spins. It is definitely not the slot you can make your riches off. Treat it like a visit to the museum of futuristic slots. In that respect, you definitely will not leave disappointed.
