Need something to brighten up this dreary cold weather? Well, pay a visit to the Wizard of Gems! This new slot by Play’n Go is a cheery and colourful one. I invite you to quickly scroll through this review and check out all the screenshots. There’s a welcoming Wizard with a bright star on his wand, a magical forest and candy-coloured gems. It reminds me of the cartoons I used to watch as a little girl, only that this iteration is made for adults. The game mechanics are as friendly as its aesthetics. The slot game brings together features that we already know and love in the shape of multipliers, free spins and cascading reels – read all about it in this review of Wizard of Gems!

Wizard of Gems is made of 5 reels and 20 paylines. The reels are loaded with colourful gems, which pay out up to 12,500 times your bet. There seven different symbols – all of which are gems in different colours and shapes.
Since all the symbols are gems, it’s quite hard to spot the high value ones from the regular ones. Look out for the blue ones, both the lighter turquoise blue and the darker prussian blue. I’d recommend flipping through the paytable first to get acquainted with the symbols before playing.
Bets cost anywhere between 20p and £50 per spin and the 20 paylines are fixed. In a way, this slot uses the most deceiving trick in the book. It disguises small wins and fools you into thinking that you’re making money. In most cases, you’d actually spend more than you win. Take a £1 spin for instance – you’re effectively betting 5p per payline. If you score a low-value winning payline with 3x multiplier, your winning is only 5p x 3 = 15p!

Look out for the star scatter symbols. You need to score three stars anywhere on the reels to win 10 free spins. You can win up to 50 free spins in succession! The game also guarantees at least one Wild symbol in each free spin round. Theoretically, you can score up to nine Wild symbols at a time, although I’ve never had such good fortune before. All these Wild symbols make for very profitable free spin rounds.
Consecutive wins are celebrated here in Wizard of Gems. Unlike regular slot reels that spin, Wizard of Gems features cascading reels. Whenever you score a winning payline, gems “cascade” and fall into place, filling in the gaps. You could consider them as mini free spins!
It isn’t just a visual gimmick either. Every time new symbols drop, you’ll receive a multiplier (not very large ones, from x1 to x5). I could just feel a bubble of hope expanding inside me after every round, as I waited for bigger and bigger wins. Nothing like a little extra excitement to spice up your day.
Do you notice the gems glistening across the reels? It’s a clever little visual trick, leading you to believe that they are valuable treasures. I enjoyed the uplifting tunes accompanying the game too, although I must admit muting the game after I got tired of it. All in all, it’s a fairly well made game.
Hey, you look familiar!
Would you like to play a game of spot the difference? Look at the picture below – it’s a screenshot of another slot by Play’n GO called Gemix. Doesn’t it look really similar to Wizard of Gems? You’ll recognize the candy symbols and the book of spells! It makes me slightly mad that slot developers tease us with “new games” that aren’t actually new. It didn’t take much detective work to find twins in the slots world.
Wizard of Gems isn’t particularly different from other slots. It is no different from Gemix. I’d say that this game is “just okay.” I preferred their previous new release – the Eye of the Kraken. That one’s properly pretty and slightly more profitable than the Wizard of Gems. The Wizard of Gems is just a remake of other good slots before itself. You have to give it to them for presentation though – the Wizard of Gems will lure all of us festive merry-makers into its friendly jeweled cave.
