The 24th November sees two brand new slots swinging out way from two of the most important slots developers right now. On that day NetEnt is set to release its pan-Asian inspired Warlords: Crystals of Power, while Play’n GO will be putting out its new The 7 Sins, inspired (as one might guess from the title) by the seven deadly sins.
Both of these new mobile slots seem heavy on the conceptual side of the games, and seeing as they each come from studios with strong pedigrees in gameplay, it’s pretty much a given they’re going to be an absolute pleasure to play. Let’s find out the basics we know about each game, and compare them a little to see which (if either) we should be getting most excited about.
Warlords: Crystals of Power by NetEnt
It seems like every game NetEnt puts out these days has to have an elaborate backstory and rich theme, and when you’ve proven that you can deliver great looking and fun to play slots each and every time, it makes sense that you’ll be wanting to perfect and push boundaries in every direction. Whether it’s the NetEnt Rocks trilogy, or the Fairytale Legends series, NetEnt these days is all about elaborate games, and it looks like Warlords: Crystals of Power is going to be no different in this regard.
Take the teaser video recently put out for the game; before demonstrating any gameplay, there’s a minute long vividly animated introduction which introduces a number of characters discovering what we presume to be the titular Crystals of Power. Obviously it’s questionable whether we really need this kind of exposition to be able to enjoy slot games, but it definitely adds a nice extra level of depth which is relatively uncommon even now in the industry.
As you can see from the video, this 5 reel slot is loud and bold. Jammed with fantasy war imagery, this game is definitely one for the players who are comfortable with MMORPGs, and/or are fans of fantasy film and fiction. As with any NetEnt slot, you’ll find plenty of scatters and sticky wilds on the reels of Warlords, not to mention the exciting ‘battle’ bonus game which promises higher multipliers and free re-spins.
Warlords: Crystals of Power is going to be an aggressive game which won’t necessarily appeal to everyone, but for its target audience, it might prove to be one of the most popular releases of the year.
The 7 Sins by Play’n GO
If Warlords is the epitome of how NetEnt is making slots at the moment, The 7 Sins represents the same for Play’n GO. The aesthetics alone mark out The 7 Sins as a Play’n GO slot the moment you look at it, while the gameplay fits perfectly within the developer’s oeuvre.
As you’ll probably have worked out, the theme of the slot is the seven deadly sins (Gluttony, Greed, Wrath, Lust, Envy, Sloth and Vanity), personified in the game by 7 bosomly women. While these characters are what the game’s theme is established through, it’s setting and reel layout is unfortunately rather basic, with far less effort put in than with Warlords to create a holistic theme.
The saving grace of The 7 Sins is the gameplay. Not only are scatters and wilds dispersed around the reels, you also have the chance to win 7 free spins relatively often (get it, 7 free spins?), and can enjoy massive multipliers for landing between 3 and 7 of the same symbol on the reels after a spin. These unique bonus features are the hallmark of Play’n Go, and a compelling reason to give The 7 Sins a fair go when it comes out.
Honestly, of the two slots coming out later this month, it’s pretty clear that this is going to be the most forgettable. While the theme of the seven deadly sins is definitely interesting and compelling subject matter, it lingers a little too close to the ‘sex sells’ philosophy which so often detracts from otherwise decent games.
I’m not saying the slot isn’t going to be fun, and will certainly appeal to a certain kind of player, but at least at this early stage, Warlords does more to establish itself as a game with stamina which we’ll keep going back to again and again.
