So. Basketball. A fast-paced, high-scoring game that involves a lot of skill to play well. Nothing at all like slots where all you need is a bit of luck. And now Microgaming has put the two together to make Basketball Star, a video slot so rare it took this writer forever to find it even though it was only released in November. When I did eventually find it, I found the game to be easy to play with rewarding bonuses. But was it worth the search? Read on to find out.

As mentioned, Basketball star promotes itself by proclaiming it has 243 ways to win. This is easy to believe considering the amount of times the winning chimes of the game sounded when I spun the reel. The most likely cause of this is the Free Spin feature which allows you free spins depending how basketballs you land on.

Depending on how many basketballs you see on your screen will receive the following:

  • Three basketballs – 15 free spins
  • Four basketballs – 20 free spins
  • Five basketballs – 25 free spins

During each spin, the win will increase the multiplier by 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x and then 10x. This means gameplay with Basketball Star is immensely rewarding with generous payouts.

As mentioned in the previous section, the Free Spins feature alone is what makes Basketball Star a richly challenging experience with generous payouts. But the slot has two other main features for players to take advantage of.

The first of these is the Wild Shot Feature which appears randomly in the main game only and only two reels will turn wild, offering a guaranteed win. This is an exciting feature and can increase your win exponentially.

The second of these is the Rolling Reels feature. Every time you land a winning combo in the base game of free spins, said symbols will vanish and allow more to drop into take their place. This isn't especially unique but it works and offers more chance at getting that 200k cash prize.

As far as graphics go, they're pretty average. Several times during the game, I felt that the reel-spin looked rather jolt-y and there was a definite delay when I pressed the spin button. It may just be my ancient computer but it had no trouble with other slot titles where the reel-spin was positively smooth. It wouldn't even play on my mobile.

The design, also, is rather basic at best, kind of off-putting at worse. I mean, look at those faces in the above image! I'm sure real basketball players make those faces whilst they're playing but they're not particularly flattering, especially as they're vector images of possible real-life photos.

The background music is okay. It's just cheers and crowd noises you might hear when watching a game yourself. Nothing particularly inspired but it works and at least it congratulates you on your winnings.

Unique Features?

When all is said and done, there isn't anything that special about Basketball Star besides the tagline of: "243 ways to win". The spin feature is probably the best one with its 'basketball' rule that imports a sort of strategy to your gameplay.

If you replace basketball with, say, fruits or animals then the basic concept remains the same. Does the fact that I found this game difficult to find make it unique over other video slots? Probably.

A fun game but unimaginative. The winnings are quite large and winning itself is fairly easy to achieve (which can be good and bad). It's good enough to gain our approval but we won't be rushing to play it again any time soon. The design is rudimentary, sad to say, and the performance could do with some work. All we can say to Microgaming is: we know you can do better than this. Try again.
