Review: Lucky Leprechaun by Microgaming
Just in time for Saint Patrick’s day, you lucky revellers! The newly released Microgaming slot delivers contemporary HD quality, while sticking to a classic 'luck of the Irish' theme. Why reinvent the reel when the old one worked just fine? Of course, this five reel and 20 payline game is spruced up, featuring great graphics and exciting features, but just how good of a job did Microgaming do?
Upon first glance, the game differs a great deal from Microgaming's old Lucky Leprechauns Loot slot, which didn't get raving reviews. Out is the dingy, dark-green colour scheme and thankfully the clichéd rainbows are long gone too. This slot truly feels contemporary, yet without looking too similar to other Irish-themed slots with samey name, like Leprechaun’s Luck. Tomato, tomato!
Although the overall theme is rather common, the symbols of a smoking pipe or a pint of Guiness are different from what you can find in other Irish slots. You are met by a cheeky leprechaun as you launch the game who welcomes you and chuckles infectiously, giving the game an aura that all is ‘fun and games’. In our book, that’s a perfect way to relax and enjoy an evening gambling on your mobile.
This online slot has five reels and features a fixed number of 20 paylines – some players may be put off by it, but if you can’t be bothered to readjust the paylines anyway, then this might be the perfect solution for you. You can still adjust the total sum that you wager per spin by betting anywhere from 20p to £20. That said, the maximum win of £2,000 isn't hugely impressive, but considering that relatively large wins come your way rather often, and that this slot has a very decent return percentage, it still is a great proposition. Lastly, this is a fast-paced slot, so if you'd rather play with money wagers and take your time, Lucky Leprechaun may not be the best option for you.
For a moment, let’s choose to ignore the fact that the Lucky Leprechaun slot is probably the hundredth slot with an Irish theme and evaluate its features objectively.
If you aren’t engaged by the magical journey theme, perhaps the stacked wilds will capture your imagination. Stacked wilds are essentially one ginormous wild symbol that can cover the entire last reel. When it happens, you will get five free spins with an initial 2x multiplier. However, if you have green or gold clovers on your other reels too, there are more free spins and more generous multipliers to be had!
Another compelling feature is the Trail O’ Fortune, which presents one with a table-game type of board. You’ll spin the wheel and joyfully skip along the winding trail that leads to the ultimate prize of them all – an enormous 1000x multiplier. Watch out for the secretly hidden emeralds which will allow you to play the game for longer because they award extra spins. There are also rainbows that appear, giving you a helping hand and acting as a bridge to get you to a higher multiplier (think snakes and ladders).
Perhaps it's not so obvious, but the game lacks a progressive jackpot, which would be a very nice final touch. Especially with Saint Patrick’s Day happening in less than two weeks, Microgaming could have considered putting in a jackpot that could accumulate a hefty sum in that time. However, we think that casinos which will pick up this game in the coming days will certainly feature it in some sort of promotions that will give you even more incentives to play.
It was already mentioned that game looks splendid in terms of graphics, and the sounds are great too. But we expected nothing less from Microgaming, a software provider which always excels in aesthetics. The symbols are well-designed, without being too tacky or cartoonish. As you move your cursor on the screen, it leaves a sparkly trail and the leprechaun jumping around in the Trail O’ Fortune feature is a character that successfully represents the charm of the Irish culture – drinking Guinness, dancing around and being jolly.
The sound effects are worthy of a mention too. The leprechaun character speaks and engages with the players, while the cursor leaving a sparkly trail also has a ‘magical’ sound effect accompanying it. Quite obviously, the designers and the developers understand how slots work and the sounds can either make or break it. With Lucky Leprechaun, they’ve ensured that the slot leaves a lasting impression with faultless audio-visuals.
Seeing the same slot themes emerge time and time again, even with ‘new slots’, begs the question – has the treasure trove of game themes been exhausted? You got your candy, pirate, Aztec, princess, Christmas, animal, fruit, Irish, sports…The list goes on and on. And when a new slot comes by, we eagerly hope that it actually is something new. More often than not, the developers choose to tap into the ‘classic’ themes and redevelop old slots, just like Lucky Leprechaun. It’s about time we see more thinking outside the box. Pretty please!
Besides the common theme, we like the Lucky Leprechaun. The Irish themed game is a massive crowd pleaser – not only does it have the usual features, such as the multipliers, free spins and a feature game, but it also offers bets to suit every pocket size. Overall, we don’t doubt for a minute that the slot can entertain for hours.
