Review: River of Riches by Rabcat
Rabcat is the one to watch in the gaming world today. This Austrian-based game developer has been constantly churning out head-turning and award-winning slots. There’s Castle Builder, a level-based slots that’s been honoured by EGR Awards as the 2013 Game of the Year; the recently released Dragon's Myth takes players on an epic adventure fighting dragons. Today, Rabcat has released yet another amazing video slot – River of Riches. The video slot looks as great as ever. More importantly, it’s a profitable one! I scored multiple winning streaks with this bad boy.
Slot Game Overview:
River of Riches takes you on an ancient Eygptian tale, in which a river exists deep below ground. Apparently, liquid gold flows through this river! Here’s a spoiler: I trawled the Internet to see if the story checks out and... it doesn’t. The only “rich” river in Egypt is the River Nile, which supported early civilisations with its fertile lands. Anyway, let’s play along with the story. River of Riches is set in the depths of the Egyptian pyramids. At first glance, this game is much prettier than the hundreds of other Egyptian-themed games on the market. Best of all, River of Riches lives up to its name! It showered me with few tens of pounds after a single 15-minute session. In short, this video slot is a money-maker.
As Rabcat puts it, their premium video slots are characterised by sophisticated game mathematics. The developers have configured the game such that you’ll enjoy multiple win streaks, or few winning combinations in a row! It was so satisfying! I played this game after a particularly long day, and River of Riches absolutely cheered me up.
Other basic specifications: there are five reels and 25 paylines in this video slot. The game allows you to vary the paylines during the game. The general rule is the more paylines you bet on, the faster the game goes by. This is a moderate variance slot, so your cash will last for few more spins than usual. There are Wild symbols to complete your paylines and an Auto-spin mode too so that you can play hands-free.
In my opinion, the Scatter symbols are the star-attraction of this slot. When two or more Scatter symbols appear, anywhere on the reels, you’ll be rewarded with instant cash bonuses! You can win up to £2,500 with these Scatter symbols, although the average pay out is about £10 to £20. That’s not bad at all, considering that I had only bet a few quid.
If three or more Scatter symbols appear on the reels, you’ll get 10 Free Spins. During these Free Spins, up to 4 Fixed Wild symbols gets placed on reels 2 and 4. These Fixed Wild symbols will stay in the same position and complete paylines. It’ll keep generating extra cash, even if additional free spins are won. Sadly, these free spins are pretty hard to come by.
There’s an extra Gamble feature. It’s a game of “double or nothing”. After every winning combination, you can click on Gamble and enter this mini game. You’ll bet on either red or black; if your choice matches the next card that appears on the decks, you’ll leave with twice as much money. Of course, pick wrongly and you’ll lose the money. That’s the thrill of gambling!
Oh Rabcat, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways. I loved the celebratory sound effects – every win was punctuated by a very satisfying explosive sound, there was fire and pomp too! I loved how the rocks crumbled and shifted as the reels spun. I loved how the symbols come to life when you strike a winning combination, and how the music is synchronised with the action on screen. I love how they add suspense by slowing down the reels at the most critical moments. I appreciated how simple the user controls were too. Everything just works beautifully.
However, Rabcat didn’t quite develop the storyline and we aren’t introduced to that mythical river at any point in the game. The adventurer/hunk that appears in the game header does not make an appearance either.
River of Riches is a lot milder than Rabcat’s previous productions. Rabcat has created interactive Wild symbols and level-based slots; so I was slightly disappointed that River of Riches was so simple. It’s one of those basic slots that every company produces, the game that players can turn to for quick flutter.
Of course, Rabcat does basics a lot better than the average slot developer. After all, Microgaming has picked up Rabcat’s games and distributed them on its Quickfire platform. This partnership that further confirms Rabcat’s credentials. If a million-dollar powerhouse like Microgaming takes notice of an indie gaming company like Rabcat, its games must be quite something.
The only let-down so far is that I couldn’t find the mobile version of this game anywhere. It seems that Rabcat hasn’t rolled out the mobile version to casinos yet. If you do play on your laptop from time to time, you must give River of Riches a shot. Its win streaks are a lot of fun and its graphics are gorgeous.
